Tsujido Roadside Sanctuary (tsujidoo)

***** Location: Japan
***** Season: Non-seasonal Topic
***** Category: Humanity

*****************************
Explanation

Here is a haiku by Yosa Buson which started the quest.

. Yosa Buson 与謝蕪村 in Edo .

辻堂の仏にともすほたる哉
tsujidoo no hotoke ni tomosu hotaru kana

at the wayside shrine
the Buddha is alight
with fireflies . . .

or

the stone Buddha
at the roadside shrine is alight
with fireflies . . .

Translators problems as usual :

Is it one Buddha or more, like the "Six Jizo Statues", we often find at a crossroad?

Is it one firefly or more?
I tend to see more than just one, as I always do here in our fields.

tsujidoo 辻堂 a small building or hall (doo) at a crossroads (tsuji), where the Deities have to watch over the travellers.

The six Jizo are maybe the most popular deities at crossroads, often as stone statues without any hall to protect them. See link below.

Tsujindoo 辻堂(つじんどう)

Tsujindoo Yakebotoke 「辻堂焼け仏」
A stone monument of a "burned Buddha"
near Temple Joruji in Nara. The wooden hall, where the memorial had been sheltered, burned down long ago and since then the stone is exposed to nature. The stone is about 2 meters high. Both sides of the stone still show the remains of the burning.

Poor people wandering along in Japan often took shelter in these small halls and some died for want of food and energy to carry on.
