2012 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Gustav Klimt.
His work is in/famously known for "frank eroticism," and his primary subject was the female body.

Today, Cologne is the first of 150 cities in which Morales-de la Cruz plans to present great art on nude women.

Explanation

quote
In physical geography, tundra is a biome
where the tree growth is hindered by low temperatures and short growing seasons.
The term tundra comes from Kildin Sami tūndâr, which means "uplands, treeless mountain tract." There are two types of tundra: Arctic tundra (which also occurs in Antarctica) and alpine tundra. In tundra, the vegetation is composed of dwarf shrubs, sedges and grasses, mosses, and lichens. Scattered trees grow in some tundra. The ecotone (or ecological boundary region) between the tundra and the forest is known as the tree line or timberline.

Climatic classification
Tundra climates ordinarily fit the Köppen climate classification ET, signifying a local climate in which at least one month has an average temperature high enough to melt snow (0°C or 32°F), but no month with an average temperature in excess of (10°C/50°F). The cold limit generally meets the EF climates of permanent ice and snows; the warm-summer limit generally corresponds with the poleward or altitudinal limit of trees, where they grade into the subarctic climates designated Dfd and Dwd (extreme winters as in parts of Siberia), Dfc typical in Alaska, Canada, European Russia, and Western Siberia (cold winters with months of freezing), or even Cfc (no month colder than -3°C as in parts of Iceland and southernmost South America). Tundra climates as a rule are hostile to woody vegetation even where the winters are comparatively mild by polar standards, as in Iceland.

Scarcity or lushness (by polar standards) of native vegetation of tundra regions depends more upon the severity of the temperatures than upon the scarcity or copiousness of precipitation. The alpine tundra also lacks in precipitation compared to the Arctic tundra.

Cor van den Heuvel

quote
Carmen Sterba :
I would be interested in how you interpret your one word haiku, “tundra”.
Or is that left to the reader?

Cor van den Heuvel:
It is what it is: “a level or undulating plain characteristic of arctic or subarctic regions.” The important things are to see it alone in the mind or in the middle of an otherwise blank page and to color it with a season, preferably spring when it is blowing forever with grasses, flowers, birds (with their nests and eggs), and insects; or in winter when it is covered with endless drifted snow. To see the vastness of it spreading out from the word across the page and across the world. And to hear the sound of it. The word.

Explanation

An Olympiad is a period of four years, associated with the Olympic Games of Classical Greece. In the Hellenistic period, beginning with Ephorus, Olympiads were used as a calendar epoch. In this reckoning, the first Olympiad lasted from the summer of 776 BC to that of 772 BC.
An Olympiad started with the games, which were held at the beginning of the Olympic new year, which fell on the full moon closest to the summer solstice.
By extrapolation, the 4th year of the 696th Olympiad begins in summer 2008.

CLICK for more photosThe Summer Olympic Games or the Games of the Olympiad are an international multi-sport event, organised by the International Olympic Committee. The Olympics are the most prestigious such event in the world, though they are not the world's most-watched sporting event - the television audience for the single-sport FIFA World Cup is larger. Medals are awarded in each event, with gold medals for first place, silver for second and bronze for third, a tradition which started in 1904.

Organisers for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing expect approximately 10,500 athletes to take part in the 302 events on the programme for the Games.

The Winter Olympic Games (or Winter Olympics) are a winter multi-sport event held every four years. They feature winter sports held on ice or snow, such as ice skating and skiing.

Fewer nations participate in the Winter Olympics than the Summer Olympics, due largely to the reduced popularity of winter sports in many countries nearer to the equator where access to winter sport training facilities are relatively limited or non-existent.

olympic torch relay 2008

Zenko-Ji -
the relay stops
before it starts

NAGANO — 善光寺
CLICK for more information.Zenkoji, the city of Nagano's main temple, declined Friday to serve as the starting point of the Japan leg of the torch relay for the Beijing Olympics, citing safety concerns and the crackdown on Buddhists in Tibet.

Zenkoji Temple's decision will force organizers to alter the route with just eight days to go before the relay, which has been marred by protests in other parts of the world.

"Indiscriminate killings were undertaken in Tibet," Shinsho Wakaomi, a Zenkoji official, told reporters at City Hall. "We were concerned about the crackdown on Buddhists in Tibet who rose up."

Wakaomi said the temple, which played a role in opening the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics by ringing its bell, received more than 100 calls about the torch relay, including protests over its earlier plan to use its premises for the starting ceremony.

The torch run was to start from Zenkoji Temple at 8:30 a.m., covering 18.5 km.

"the Eiffel tower, which looks like an ayatori pattern, also begins the winter season"

There are many patterns for the ayatori game in Japan, but "Eiffel Tower" is a new image used by Arima sensei. Maybe he is in Paris on a dreary day in early winter and remembers the games of his childhood. ayatori is a game played inside during the long winter months. The skilfull use of the kigo brings this atmosphere of expectation of long dark months ahead.

Explanation

A computer is a machine which manipulates data according to a list of instructions.

Computers take numerous physical forms. The first devices that resemble modern computers date to the mid-20th century (around 1940 - 1941), although the computer concept and various machines similar to computers existed earlier. Early electronic computers were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers. Modern computers are based on comparatively tiny integrated circuits and are millions to billions of times more capable while occupying a fraction of the space.

Today, simple computers may be made small enough to fit into a wrist watch and be powered from a watch battery. Personal computers in various forms are icons of the information age and are what most people think of as "a computer". However, the most common form of computer in use today is by far the embedded computer. Embedded computers are small, simple devices that are often used to control other devices—for example, they may be found in machines ranging from fighter aircraft to industrial robots, digital cameras, and even children's toys.

yashikirin 屋敷林 ( やしきりん ) trees around a home
yashikibayashi, manor house forest

In many of the large planes facing the Sea of Japan, the winter winds are quite fierce and strong trees around an isolated homestead protect the houses. The small forests also provide good wood for building a house. The fallen leaves give firewood and compost. Many birds nest in special trees planted for them, leaving their droppings, which in turn provide new plants growing below the trees. Bigger trees on the outside protect fruit trees on the inside, providing food for the winter months.
Local varieties in the form of these small forests show the aesthetic feeling of an area.
In the plains around Izumo, for example, they take the shape of the roof of the Grand Shrine of Izumo.

Compiled by Larry Bole :

William J. Higginson says on the topic of "tree" as kigo
(from "Haiku World"):

"The names of many trees suggest their blossoms or fruit which are often seasonal. But the evergreens and cedar and the names alone of many deciduous trees such as oak and birch, do not have particular seasonal assocations. ..."

Higginson then goes on to point out two specific exceptions to the observaton that "the names alone of many deciduous trees do not have particular seasonal associations," namely the maple (kaede, momiji, late autumn) and the willow (yanagi, late spring).

Young American beech trees (Fagus Grandifolia) keep their autumn leaves (golden brown) all winter. This makes them relatively unique among deciduous trees.
Could this aspect of a young American beech tree be a winter kigo?

Arbor Day - April 10
observance kigo for spring in the USA

Arbor Day (from the Latin arbor, meaning tree)
is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. It originated in Nebraska City, Nebraska, United States by J. Sterling Morton. The first Arbor Day was held on April 10, 1872, and an estimated one million trees were planted that day.

Many countries now observe a similar holiday. Though usually observed in the spring, the date varies, depending on climate and suitable planting season.

Birdsey Northrop of Connecticut was responsible for globalizing it when he visited Japan in 1883 and delivered his Arbor Day and Village Improvement message. In that same year, the American Forestry Association made Northrop the Chairman of the committee to campaign for Arbor Day nationwide. He also brought his enthusiasm for Arbor Day to Australia, Canada and Europe.

Arbor Day reached its height of popularity on its 125th anniversary in 1997, when David J. Wright, noticed that a Nebraska nonprofit organization called the National Arbor Day Foundation had taken the name of the holiday and commercialized it for their own use as a trademark for their publication "Arbor Day," so he countered their efforts, launched a website, and trademarked it for "public use celebrations" and defended the matter in a federal district court in the United States[2] to ensure it was judged as property of the public domain, the case was settled in October 1999. Today anyone can use the term "Arbor Day" as well as hold their own Arbor Day celebration.

Japan celebrates a similarly themed Greenery Day, held on May 4.
Although it has a similar theme to Arbor Day, its roots lay in celebration of the birthday of Emperor Hirohito.

Free and Easy Wandering

"What can I do with an old tree?"

"Why don't you plant it in Not-Even-Anything Village,
or the field of Broad-and-Boundless,
relax and do nothing by its side,
or lie down for a free and easy sleep under it?
Axes will never shorten its life, nothing can ever harm it.
