Born as third daughter in Kagoshima in a family of a high official.
In 1909 she married the painter Sugita Udai 杉田宇内 and lived with him in Ogura, Kyushu.
In 1911, her first daugher was born, later to become haiku poet Ishi Masako 石昌子.
In 1916, her brother, the poet Akahori Gessen 赤堀月蟾 moved in with her family and started to teach her haiku and her career as a writer began.

In 1922 she and her husband became Christians and were baptised. The haiku about reading the bible shows her interest in this religion.

Director of Hototogisu magazine, Kyoshi Takahama intended to propagate haiku to women. He instituted the section "The Kitchen songs" where were published women's haikus; there were published such excellent poets as Kanajo Hasegawa (1887 ~ 1969) and Midorijo Abe (1886 ~ 1980).

Among other female poets, Hisajo Sugita showed talent and she exploited new possibilities.

One of the characteristics of the Taisho Hototogisu poets is the technique to create a pseudo-perspective by combining the distant view and the foreground.


I take off the dress hana-goromo.
Its varied braids twine
Round my body.

* hana-goromo: in April, Japanese stroll through the parks or the temples to admire cherry blossoms (to go to hana-mi).
The women wear then hana-goromo, beautiful kimono for hana-mi.
