小西来山（こにしらいざん）

famous haiku poet of the Genroku period (1688-1704)
Genroku Haikai Poets


Born in Osaka. His father was a dealer in medicinal herbs in Hiranomachi, but died when Raizan was just nine years old. It seems he had his first contact with haiku at the age of 7, at age 25 he met his teacher Saikaku 西鶴 and also studied with Nishiyama Soin.
His mother, who lived with him, died when he was 48 years.
He married late, at age 51, but his wife died after three years.

He married again at age 57, and had two sons, but his oldest son died when he was just one year old.


His name was Izaemon 伊右衛門,
other names are 満平,十万堂,湛翁 and 湛々翁.

He was very active around 1690 in Osaka, Imamiya discrict.
His poems imbue the sentiment of makoto, sincerity.

He published Haikai Sanbutsu 俳諧三物

After his death, the collection Imamiyagusa 今宮草was published in 1734.
