三輪翠羽(みわ すいう) Miwa Sui-u, Miwa Suiu

She was born in Akita.
Her name was HISA ひさ. Together with her husband Ryoohitsu 良弼, she worked at a school, which the couple opened in their home, to educate children, especially the girls. Everyone liked her and called her "Auntie Miwa" “三輪のおばさん”.

haru yuku mo shira-de ya nemuru kusa no choo

Not knowing that Spring
is departing, a butterfly
lies dying in the grass.

[Translated by Hugh Bygott]

Miwa Suiu-Jo, a woman poet, has understood the "Pathos of things".
This mono no aware, an ideal from the waka poetry of the Heian Period, is expressed beautifully. I concede that I have translated nemuru as to die rather than the more usual to sleep.
